Evaluating Server Environments for Reliability and Security - ELD and Telematics Providers

When picking an ELD or telematics provider, it's important to know if the online services the vendor offers will be reliable and protect your data. Here are some questions to consider:

  • What happens if their server goes down?
  • What happens if the data center loses connectivity to the internet?
  • Do they encrypt your data and follow cyber-security best practices?
  • Do they create and maintain backups of your data?

At ZED, we know that these are all mission-critical considerations for our customers, and they are important for us as well. ZED is backed by Cummins, a Fortune 150 company that been around for 100 years. Cummins has very high standards for their engines as well as their IT systems. ZED leveraged the expertise of Cummins to make sure the server environments we designed meet the highest and most modern standards. But we didn't stop there - we hired an independent third party to conduct security audits as well.

ZED Connect is Serious about Uptime and Security:

The ZED Connect server environment uses a Highly Available architecture with no single points of failure, providing extremely high server uptime, redundancy, and security.

High Availability of Servers and Data Centers: ZED Connect's computing resources are arranged using Multi-Availability Zones. This means that the computing resources are mirrored across multiple data centers that are located in different regions of the United States. All platform level compute resources are "active-active", so there is no recovery period if one of the Zones goes offline. This means that ZED can lose an entire Data Center without any service interruption, seamlessly and automatically redirecting all affected users to another Zone.

Zero Downtime Software Updates: Platform level software deploys occur "hot". So unlike legacy architectures, there is no required maintenance window and no service outage while the software update is deployed. The ZED Connect platform doesn't maintain a regularly planned outage service window, because it simply doesn't require one.

Data Integrity and Security: ZED's databases are likewise mirrored across multiple Data Centers. Daily snapshots serve as backups in the event of data corruption or loss. The storage environment is encrypted and the data itself is encrypted (in motion and at rest) to protect our customers.  ZED's cloud computing environment uses what is is widely regarded as the global leader and most reliable provider of cloud computing services and is ISO9001 certified.
