ELD Mandate 101 - What is a Timing Compliance Malfunction?

With the US ELD mamdate fast approaching and starting live on Dec 18 2017, here is Zed Connect's next installment our our ELD Mandate 101 training:

The ELD must obtain and record the date and time information automatically without allowing any external input or interference from a motor carrier, driver, or any other person.
The ELD time must be synchronized to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and the absolute deviation from UTC must not exceed 10 minutes at any point in time.
If the ELD is unable to synchronize with the UTC source for more than 10 minutes at any point in time then a timing malfunction is recorded
